Expired yogurt: how long is it still good?
In most countries yogurt carries a best-before date (“best if used by”), not a use-by date. Unopened and kept cold the whole time, it is often still good 1 to 2 weeks past the date. Check it quickly before eating: look, smell, taste a little. Mold or a strongly bulging lid: throw it out.
Yogurt past the date: guidelines
| Situation | Guideline | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Unopened, in the fridge | often 1–2 weeks past the date | Flat lid, no mold, smells fresh and slightly tangy |
| Opened, in the fridge | 3–5 days after opening | Always use a clean spoon and close it well |
| Left out for a long time (over 2 hours) | do not keep | This applies even before the date |
| Frozen | up to about 2 months | Texture turns grainy: fine for smoothies and baking |
How to check yogurt in 30 seconds
- Look: Is the lid flat? Can you see mold (spots or fuzz, including around the rim)?
- Smell: Fresh yogurt smells mild and tangy. If it smells yeasty, fermented or rotten: throw it out.
- Taste: Try a small spoonful. If it tastes normal, you can eat it. If it is bitter or very sour: throw it out.
Liquid on top: is that a problem?
No. The clear liquid is whey. It separates over time and is not a sign of spoilage. Just stir it back in or pour it off. Only if the smell or taste is also off does the yogurt belong in the trash.
When to always throw yogurt away
- If there is mold, even a single small spot. Do not scrape it off: mold threads can spread through the whole cup.
- If the lid is strongly domed. This can point to yeasts or other microbes.
- If it smells or tastes fermented, yeasty or rotten.
- If it was left unrefrigerated for a long time, for example in a hot car.
Best before or use by?
“Best before” or “best if used by” is the manufacturer’s quality promise: until that day, the product is guaranteed to taste and look as it should. After that it is often still perfectly fine. It is worth checking.
“Use by” appears on highly perishable foods such as ground meat or fresh fish. Do not eat them after this date, even if everything looks and smells normal.
How to make yogurt last longer
- Store it at the back of a middle shelf in the fridge, not in the door. It is colder and more stable there.
- Refrigerate it quickly after shopping, especially in summer.
- Close opened cups well and only use a clean spoon.
- What you will not finish in time: freeze it or use it in smoothies, sauces and cakes.
Frequently asked questions
Can you eat yogurt 2 weeks after the date?
Often yes, if it was unopened and always kept cold, the lid is flat and it smells and tastes normal. There is no guarantee: check it before eating and throw it out if in doubt.
Why is my yogurt lid bulging?
A slightly domed lid can come from the live yogurt cultures. If it is strongly puffed up, yeasts or other microbes may be the cause. Better throw it out.
Can you scrape mold off yogurt?
No. In soft foods like yogurt, mold threads can spread invisibly through the whole cup. Throw the entire cup away.
Can you freeze yogurt?
Yes, for up to about 2 months. After thawing it turns a little grainy. Less nice to eat with a spoon, but good for smoothies, sauces and cakes.
All figures are guidelines for food that is stored correctly and kept chilled. No guarantee: when in doubt, throw it out. Take extra care during pregnancy and with young children, older or vulnerable people.
